A Quick Guide to Understanding Business Process Management
Business Process Management, or BPM, is a term that is growing in popularity from small companies to large corporations. However, it's far from a new concept and it boils down to devising a systemic approach to organization and workflow management within the office.
The ultimate goal of BPM is to devise efficient solutions to everyday tasks that will enhance productivity, reduce costs, and increase the level of service your company is providing to clients. In effect, it's infrastructure management that is designed to make administration of core operations easier to stay on top of.
When applied to document management, BPM involves direct lines from the IT department to every other department within your operations. Connecting these departments, the IT department can utilize a number of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solutions so that information flows quickly and freely wherever it needs to go.
Naturally, the first step of the BPM process is to determine which framework will work best for your operations. There are three options to select from:
- Horizontal - Handles design and development of processes built around technology and the reuse of existing infrastructure.
- Vertical - Focuses on specific tasks using pre-built templates that can be customized and integrated into operations quickly and with minimal information disruption.
- Full-Service - The most comprehensive of the options, it involves project scoping, modeling, design, and the creation of both a workflow and business rules engine customized to your operations. Before deployment, the system is fully tested and put through its paces to ensure functionality and reliability.
In the modern era of communication technology, BPM can be conducted both on-site and within the realm of cloud computing. Combined with software as a service options, BPM is an effective way to ensure your business stays on top of your client's needs and continues to provide them the service they've come to expect and depend upon from your company.
