The first year or two, an entrepreneur's job is to hone the product(s) and/or service(s) so they are marketable. You keep your nose to the grindstone and your eye on the target. Once Phase One is well underway, it's time to take a deep breath and start looking ahead so you can keep your business growing and evolving successfully.

The thing is, being an entrepreneur doesn't necessarily mean you are adept at running and growing a business. In fact, many entrepreneurs really struggle after the initial surge of success because they are best at the brainstorming, creativity, energy and enthusiasm it takes to launch a business. However, the next several moves you make mean all the difference as to whether or not your business will make it in the long-term.

Here are tips for growing your company so you can enjoy its successes for many years to come.

  1. Capitalize. In most cases, the bulk of your start-up capital will be used up by the end of the start-up phase. Now's the time to seek new capital. This will mean giving up a little control but it will be worth it.
  2. Assemble an amazing board. You may not have all the business acumen required to grow your business but others sure do. Get your Board of Directors together and make sure you install members that have the right blend of expertise, connections and experience to serve your company well.
  3. Keep the creativity flowing. Don't let your desire to outsell competitors get in the way of improving on your product and services. Maintain that entrepreneurial spirit so you can keep things new, fresh and meeting your target market's needs. The rest will fall into place.
  4. Establish a solid sales team. You need to have a solid sales team, led by experienced and talented managers to move your products/services into the real world. Establish a well-defined sales process so customer experiences are consistent.
  5. Build a winning company culture. Your company culture is imperative to growing your company. Happy employees are loyal and hardworking, and a winning company culture starts at the top.
