As in journalism, a process flow chart answers the most important questions to solve a puzzle. These questions are; who, what, where, when, why, which, and how. Knowing the answers to these questions is essential to keeping your business on track and here is how you get from start to finish in the process.

  • Where are we, and where do we want to be? Determine where you're providing service to your customers, and decide where you want to be in the future.
  • What will qualify as success?Ask what goals you will set forth, and what will you do to measure whether you have achieved them.
  • Why should you use a process? Determine what aspects of your business you want to measure. Is it customer service? Teamwork? Managerial efficiency? Consider the various elements of your business and determine a process to measure each.
  • How and when will you implement the process? As they say, this is where the rubber hits the road. You'll need to map out and diagram your processes from start to finish. Determine the steps that are needed to effectively complete each goal you've set forth.
  • Who will be a party to each process? Each process is different and may require different people or teams to complete. Make sure that responsibilities and expectations are clearly mapped out and that each individual, and each team has the authority to take on the responsibilities they are charged with performing.
  • Which aspects can be adjusted, amended, or completely altered? Managing workflow isn't always a clean and neat business. There may be times when you'll need to adjust the patterns away from your established process flow chart. Determine these and add in both flexibility and release valves so that if a team or teammate is overwhelmed, others can pick up the slack.
